Understanding the Irish Work & Study Program
Ireland offers an excellent opportunity to study English while being able to work to support yourself.
The Irish study visa allows you to enroll in English language courses while working up to 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week during holidays. This makes Ireland an attractive destination for those wanting to improve their English while gaining work experience.
The programme operates under Ireland's Stamp 2 student permission, which allows non-EU students to study English and work part-time while living in Ireland.
The Work and Study Programme allows holders of Non-EU passports to obtain a Work and Study visa which permits them to reside in Ireland for a period of eight months (and a maximum of two years, as the visa can be renewed twice). It is an excellent choice if you want to experience Irish life, greatly improve your English level and work part-time to help support your stay financially.
Students typically enroll in 25-week English courses at recognized language schools. Upon arrival, you register with immigration and receive a residence permit (IRP card) valid for the duration of your studies, renewable for up to 2 years for language students.
The work permission is automatic with your student visa - you don't need a separate work permit. This allows you to offset living costs through part-time employment in sectors like hospitality, retail, or customer service.
Citizens of the following countries can enter Ireland with a valid passport and obtain a Work and Study Visa during their first weeks in the country:
- • Argentina
- • Brazil
- • Chile
- • Costa Rica

- • Guatemala
- • Mexico

Those with a European passport can also work and study in Ireland but they don't need to comply with the same visa requirements.
Program Benefits:
- • Study English in an English-speaking country
- • Work part-time to support yourself financially
- • Experience Irish culture and lifestyle
- • Potential pathway to further study or work in Ireland
Program Structure:
Course Length: 25 weeks (6 months) of English classes
Work Rights: 20 hours/week during term, 40 hours/week during holidays
Renewability: Can be extended up to 2 years total for language study
Residence Permission: Issued under Ireland's Stamp 2 student permission
