Getting Your IRP Card in Ireland

Your Irish Residence Permit card proves your right to live and work in Ireland. Here is exactly how to get it, what to bring, and what to expect.

What is it

Your IRP card: what it is and why you need it

The Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card is the official document that proves your legal permission to stay in Ireland. It shows your Stamp type (most English-language students get Stamp 2), your expiry date, and your right to work. Without it, you cannot legally work, apply for a PPS number, or open a traditional bank account. It is the first step after arriving, and everything else depends on having it.

Where to register

All first-time registrations go to Burgh Quay in Dublin

Since January 2025, all first-time registrations in Ireland are handled exclusively at the Burgh Quay Registration Office in Dublin city centre. Regional offices no longer process first-time registrations. You must book your appointment online in advance. Appointments fill up quickly, so book as soon as you arrive in Ireland.

Burgh Quay Registration Office is in Dublin 2. Verify the current appointment booking process at irishimmigration.ie before you visit.

What to bring

Documents for your IRP registration appointment

If you arrive without all of these documents, your appointment will be cancelled and you will need to rebook. Do not leave anything out.

  • Valid passport (original, not a copy)
  • Current Irish visa (already stamped in your passport on entry)
  • Letter of acceptance from your accredited Irish English school
  • Proof of current accommodation in Ireland (lease, letter from host, or booking confirmation)
  • Private medical insurance certificate valid in Ireland
  • €300 registration fee (card payment accepted at Burgh Quay)

Step by step

How the registration process works

01

Book your appointment online

Go to irishimmigration.ie and book your registration appointment at Burgh Quay. Do this on your first day in Ireland. Slots fill quickly, especially in September and January when most students arrive.

02

Gather all your documents

Prepare every document on the list above. Missing even one will result in appointment cancellation. Make sure your insurance certificate is current and your accommodation proof is dated and shows your name.

03

Attend your appointment

Arrive on time at Burgh Quay. Your documents will be checked, you will pay the €300 fee, and your biometric data will be taken. The appointment takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

04

Receive your IRP card by post

Your IRP card will be posted to your registered Irish address. It typically arrives within 5 to 10 working days. Do not move address before it arrives.

What comes next

What to do once you have your IRP card

1

Open a traditional bank account

With your IRP card, you can open a bank account to start receiving your salary. Revolut or N26 are usually the fastest options to begin. Later, if you prefer, you can open an account with a traditional Irish bank.

2

Start working legally

With your IRP card, you’re legally allowed to work. A Stamp 2 permits up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and up to 40 hours during official holiday periods.

3

Apply for your PPS number

Once you have a job, you can apply for your PPS number, which is your Irish tax identification number. Many employers guide you through the process once you’re hired.
