Understanding the Italian Elective Residence Visa

The Elective Residence visa is designed for non-EU citizens who wish to live in Italy without working.

This visa is ideal for retirees, but can also be used by anyone with independent financial means who wants to enjoy life in Italy. You must demonstrate that you have stable, regular income sufficient to support yourself (and any dependents) without working.

The visa is initially granted for one year and must be converted to a residency permit upon arrival in Italy. The permit can be renewed as long as you continue to meet the requirements. After 5 years of legal residence, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence or Italian citizenship.

Key requirement: You cannot engage in any work activity in Italy with this visa. All income must come from sources outside Italy or from passive income (pensions, investments, property rental, etc.).

Who Can Apply:

  • Retirees with sufficient pension income
  • Individuals with substantial investment or rental income
  • Those with significant savings or financial assets
  • Must not have the intention or need to work in Italy

Benefits of Elective Residence:

Live in Italy long-term: Enjoy la dolce vita without working

Access to Italian healthcare: Register with the national health service (SSN)

Path to citizenship: After 5 years, eligible for permanent residence or citizenship

Family inclusion: Bring your spouse and dependent children
